We had an awesome day in Grade Two! We kicked off two new units one in Math and one in Language Arts.
In Language Arts the students worked diligently on their spelling and phonics this morning, and then progressed into our new Novel Study, "Freckle Juice", by Judy Blume. The students made insightful predictions about what the plot of the book might be about such as; "A book about a child who wants freckles" and "a story about a child who is trying to get rid of their freckles by drinking some special juice"…. Awesome predictions! As a class we did a read aloud for chapter one, then the students enthusiastically worked on creative writing assignment that was about what they would do if they could drink a magical juice. The answers were fantastic and very creative!
In Mathematics, we began our new unit on Linear Measurement, Perimeter, and Area. We discussed the Achievement Goals at the beginning of our Unit on page 194. They are:
- Estimate, measure, and compare lengths using non-standards forms of measurement, including perimeter and area.
- Develop an understanding of the need for measuring using cm & m.
- Estimate, measure, and compare perimeter using standard measurement.
These Achievement Goals will be worked on over the course of the month of April and Unit 8. Today's Success Criteria that were outlined were:
- I learned that length means how long something is.
- I learned that width means how wide something is.
- I learned that height means how high something is.
The students demonstrated understanding of the above mentioned criteria and applied their knowledge in a hands on activity involving the measurement of their desks and creation of a banner, based on their measurements. With this activity they used non-standard measurement materials (snap cubes).
In the afternoon, the students completed their writing activities from their novel study and their "Paragraph Story". Once their writing was completed they transitioned to working on their printing of "F". Following Printing the students focused on their typing tutorials and use of Raz Kids software.
A dynamite day once again in Grade Two!!
