Welcome to the very first blog of Grade Two at the Maples Academy…

Today was another exciting day at the Maples Academy!

We began the day with O Canada & Morning Announcements. Next, we slipped quickly into to a wonderful spelling lesson on contractions. The students demonstrated effective understanding of the topic and success criteria. Following Spelling, we transitioned into our Unit 7 of Mathematics.

In math, we began the lesson by outlining the lesson goal for the day of, "I learned how to add two digit numbers by first adding the tens column digits and estimating the final answer". The learning was achieved by the students and demonstrated through understanding and use of place-value mats, stack & slice, and math cube strategies.

After math, we had recess and then Language Arts. In LA the students focused diligently on their Chapter One Worksheet of their novel study - "Never Hitch a ride with a Martian". We openly discussed the words and expression of the first question and how the author wrote in a personal fashion. The author's use of "I" and "I'm" to display personal connection. Once they completed their worksheet questions and we discussed the answers the students paired together and learned from each other's different thoughts and insights.

Following L.A. the students ventured to the gym for a school wide pancake lunch in their spirit teams. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and fun conversations!

The afternoon began with a continuation of the Visual Arts unit on "texture". The children creatively expressed themselves in their street scene and used many forms of texture design.

After Visual Arts, we worked on our grammar activity of the /ar/ sound then moved into typing tutorial to work on their typing skills.

Finally, the day concluded with practicing more chest passes in building the students basketball skills.
